Janie's Memories

Christmas

Winters were bitterly cold, with heavy snowfalls.

Winter in Wildflecken

Trees that kept the camp well-hidden were cut down and used to feed the woodburning stoves for heat and to bake tons of bread on a daily basis.

Eventually the camp was devoid of it's heavy forestation.

protest

In January 1947, with the Iron Curtain closing in around eastern Europe, the camp residents were in fear of being sent home to communism, so they staged a protest against a "nationality screening" that was being held at the camp.

Easter season

During the Easter season, traveling priests would visit the camp to celebrate mass, and bless the Easter food.

December 1947, another Christmas at the camp... celebrating with son, Adam.
